Benefits And Popularity Of Outboard Motor Boats
Boats have been used through the ages for travel. Over the centuries they have changed and improved, as new technology developed, showing a faster or more efficient way to travel than by canoe.
After centuries of being man powered, by way of rowing, or powered by nature with sails, boats were ready for a make-over. There were a few steam designs developed, but then came the Waterford outboard engine, developed in 1907. This was the first gas powered boat engine to come out on the market. It proved a success and many thousands of them were sold over the next few years.
But what is an outboard engine? An outboard engine is one that is self contained and has a propeller. It is mounted on the stern, or rear, of a boat. They are used, not only for propulsion, but also as a means of steering the boat, since the engine can be turned by hand, altering the location and direction of the propeller. In this simple way, outboard motor boats are easily manoeuvred through the water, in the direction decided upon by the driver. These types of motor boats are the most commonly used motorized method for propelling small boats.
Outboard motor boats progressed and were generally two-stroke powerheads that contained a carborator. These type of engines were so widely used because the design was so simple, and at the same time was quite reliable. They were lightweight and inexpensive. It was the perfect solution for small, personally owned boats.
One problem with this type of engine is that it is a heavy polluter. For this reason, over the years, regulations have been put in force in order to reduce exhaust emissions from these type of engines. A few different solutions have been found that make them more environmentally friendly, including four stroke outboards as well as two stroke engines that are computer controlled, with Direct Injection. One other fault of the outboard motor boat is that the engine is very loud, and may detract somewhat from the enjoyment of a day in the water.
Another benefit of an outboard motor boat is that the engine can be raised up and in this way, will avoid entangled with seaweed, or hitting rocks or other underwater hazards that might cause damage. The motor can also be set in this position when the boat is not in use.
From its early beginnings, the boat has come a long way. These days we have luxury yachts with their inboard motors as well as other types of engines. Still, the outboard motor remains the most popular choice for engine propulsion.
If you are looking for a small water craft for your personal use, be it for fishing or water skiing, outboard motor boats will very likely suit your needs exactly.
